CV
Niels Boeing is a successful science and technology journalist and a nanotechnology expert. He has already published several articles and books on various topics relating to nanotechnology. His book 'Nano?! Die Technik des 21. Jahrhunderts’ was published in 2004. In his science report ‘Alles Nano?!’, published in 2006, Boeing provides an impressive depiction – both technical and visionary – of the considerable influence that nanotechnology will have on life and society.
Niels Boeing, born in Bochum in 1967, studied physics at RWTH Aachen University and TU Berlin. In 1996, his career as a journalist began at the weekly newspaper Der Freitag. He then wrote for die tageszeitung (taz) before leaving his home city of Berlin in 1999 and starting at Woche, where he quickly rose to the position of science editor-in-chief. He has been a freelance author since 2002, writing on topics such as nanotechnology, the internet, climate change, artificial intelligence and synthetic biology for publications including Technology Review, Die Zeit, Financial Times Deutschland and Der Freitag.
He has participated in various town hall meetings on nanotechnology as an independent expert, most recently at the Consumer Conference Nanotechnology in Baden-Württemberg. He regularly makes presentations on various aspects of nanotechnology, including for school groups and interested individuals.
Abstract
Ten years after the tremendous sense of excitement about nanotechnology, the potential risks of nanoparticles now dominate its public perception. A more nuanced picture of what actually characterizes molecular-scale technology and the variety of opportunities it offers has been left by the wayside. To resolve this, nanotechnology must be communicated more precisely and systematically.
